With the rain behind us, seems like it’s going to be another nice and sunny weekend in Sacramento. Perfect time of year for any outdoor activity: Nice and cool & hard to break a sweat.

Head to the mountains for some ski or snowboarding.

Just 90 minutes from Sacramento, you can hit the slopes.

It can’t get any better for this time of year on the slopes. This past couple of days, Boreal received 11 inches, Sugar Bowl 14″, Palisades 15″ and Northstar 9″. If you don’t have ski or snowboards and need to rent them, you can get them here in Sacramento or try getting them in Lake Tahoe or anywhere you’re planning to go. Here are some local places to rent them in Sacramento: Land Park Ski Sports, Helm of Sun Valley. If you are in Davis or West Sacramento, you can try Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board in Davis.

Give snowshoeing a try

Snowshoeing in the Sierras

This winter sport is lot more economical and slow paced than the ones above: All you need is warm clothing, snow shoes, sticks (Is that what they call them?) and some snow. I’ve never done it yet myself but have met a few people who are not necessarily fit or young but went out with some others for the first time and loved it. Here is an article from REI with some helpful videos. Costco sells a “Snowshoe Kit” for only $140 and from what I have heard, they are of decent quality for a beginner. If you want to join a group and snowshoe with them, tomorrow, Saturday, as well as Sunday, there are some who are heading out. Here is a link to their group on meetup.com. This group called Hikers and Company, is an excellent group if you want to explore the outdoors of Sacramento. Just create a free account on meetup and join this group. Shannon is the group organizer and just a great person to know. Once you join the group, you will get automatic notifications re their activities.

Go for a Fab 40’s Christmas Lights Tour

Fabulous 40’s Christmas lights

The best place to find the Christmas spirit in Sacramento, IMO, is Fab 40’s. Get there when it gets dark, find parking (it can be challenging) and have a great time. Make sure you dress warm and use the bathroom ahead of time. If you want, you may also hire Top Hand Ranch Carriage Company for horse-drawn carriage rides.

Hike the Stebbins Cold Canyon (5 miles) with Shannon

If you missed it in the above paragraph, Shanon, a good friend of mine, has a Meet Up group called Hikers and Company. If you are new to Sacramento or to the hiking trails around Sacramento and don’t know where to start, then you must join her group. Meetup.com is a free website where you can meet up with others who share your interests and then join them for those activities. Hikers and Company, has hikes almost everyday of the week. On the weekends, they go further away from Sacramento and during the week they pretty much keep it local. You can find out about this specific hike here.
