Is it a pergola or a gazebo?

When adding an outdoor shade structure to your backyard, you have a lot of options. Since homeowners often confuse these similar structures, I want to give you some clues to help you tell the difference and choose the right one for your house.

Arbors

Arbors are the simplest one of the four in structure. Often they have sides which are formed from lattice and an arched top. But they may also be as simple as two 2×4’s leaning against each other, decorated by flowers. Their function is to add shade or decor along walkways or paths or designate an entry point. They are popular structures in weddings. See photos.

Arbors may be simply built by two pieces of wood leaning against each other.

Pergolas

Pergolas are much larger outdoor shade structure than the arbors. They have a lattice style roof, supported by posts and they define a larger area. A kitchen may be built under it and it may used to transform a patio or a yard to its own outdoor room. Their function is to provide a shady area to sit. One can also hang plants, lights or other decorations from it.

Gazebos

Gazebos, like pavilions, have solid roofs and therefore, they are often mistaken for each other.
Gazebos have solid roofs and partially open sides. They might have a built in floor or they may be put on concrete. They are often used in weddings.

Gazebos can come in many different styles.

Pavilions

Pavilions are roofed structures with no solid floor and completely open sides. The roof is typically supported by 4 or 6 posts which are anchored to a deck or concrete floor via bolts & screws. Pavilions maybe octagonal or oval but most often, they are rectangular.

Here is a quick review of the 4 types of outdoor structures:
If it’s small, simple and just for decor, it’s an arbor. You can’t really have a function under it except maybe taking photos.
If it is larger than an arbor but still has a lattice roof, it’s a pergola. Remember “Kitchen Pergola”.
If it has a solid roof, it’s either a gazebo or a pavilion.
If it has solid roof but closed sides and an entrance, it’s a gazebo. Remember “Wedding Gazebo”.
If it has solid roof but open sides, then it’s a pavilion.
