So, if for one reason or another, you missed the spring to plant your garden, you really didn’t: It’s summer but it’s really spring in Sacramento! Whether you want to grow your own fruits 🍉 and vegetables 🥦or you want to make your yard glow with flowers, there are plenty of spots in the greater Sacramento to help you get started. They have it all: soil, seeds, tools and lots of ornaments too. Some offer how-to workshops as well!

Talini’s Nursery | East Sacramento

Talini’s has history: It was established in 1970’s by an Italian immigrant and horticulturist, Pierto Talini. His son is now overseeing the 2/3 of an acre nursery in East Sacramento. They have everything from house plants and air plants to trees and organic herbs 🫑. If you have plant questions, you may contact them at [email protected]. Closed on Mondays.
High Hand Nursery | Loomis
Address: 3750 Taylor Rd | Loomis

Located at the intersection of “Great food, craft beer 🍺, weekend live bands, gourmet olive 🫒 oil tasting, jewelry shop, and lots of flowers”, High Hand Nursery and Cafe in Loomis, has it all. On their website, you get to navigate the nursery and see what they offer. This place is a Disney Land for plant lovers. They have a “stage” and have live band concerts too, on the weekends. The Secret Garden | Elk Grove

Secret Garden is great if one is looking for succulents. In fact, they sometimes offer a “Succulent Extravaganza” workshops like this weekend, 6/28 & 6/29. They are conveniently located off highway 99 in Elk Grove and are open daily 10 to 5. They also offer a “broad range of pottery, plants, fountains, and garden decor”.
The Prickly Pear | Downtown
Address: 816 U St | Sacramento

Prickly Pear is another one of Sacramento’s “Different Nurseries”. Located in Downtown, it specialize in cacti, succulents and other low maintenance plants. But that’s not all of it: They also offer skincare products, custom made pots, gift boxes and jewelry and a Winter Wonderland in December. One may also book this place for events, with rates starting at $175/ hr. Make sure you visit their Wedding Gallery. Their hours are Monday through Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00 and Sunday from 5:00 to 10:00
Redwood Barn Nursery | Davis
Address: 1607 5th St | Davis

This family owned nursery has been around since 1981. They have a very resourceful website geared towards helping the plant-loving 🌳 community with such topics as: A ripening chart for the fruit in your backyard, How to handle fireblight on pears 🍐and apples 🍎, Gardening with kids, List of flowers for beneficial insects 🦋and bees 🐝 and How to grow avocados. They have a radio show, “Davis Garden Show” which you can listen to on your computer. Their hours are Monday – Saturday 9:00 to 5:30 and Sundays 12:00 -5:00
The Plant Foundry | North Oak Park

Plant Foundry is another one of Sacramento’s “more than just a nursery” nurseries. They specialize in organic seed, soil and pesticides. Their “Redi-Grow Bulk Soil Products” section, offers many kinds of soil for your pots as well as your garden. They have a huge selection of Native Plants too.
Green Acres | Several Locations

Green Acres is the most well-known nursery in town. It has seven locations in the greater Sacramento area: Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove, Auburn, Citrus Heights. They offer everything one might need for their yard: From flowers and shrubs to soil, landscaping and outdoor fountains.
Bushnell Gardens | Granite Bay

If looking for roses 🌷, Bushnell Gardens in Granite Bay, is the place to go: There are over sixty different varieties of roses on their website. They also offer a huge selection of vegetables and herbs plus three varieties of strawberry. 🍓Their gift shop offers home decor and items like hand lotion and wash.
Fair Oaks Blvd Nursery & Gift Shop | Sacramento

Fair Oaks Blvd Nursery offers pond plants, California natives, roses, shade trees and more. Their website is under construction but they have an active Facebook Page. They are open 8:30 to 4:30 every day.
Propagate Plants & Gatherings
Address: 1700 I St | Sacramento

Propagate Plants and Gathering in Midtown Sacramento, is amazing. They have a “Plant Shop” with “wide variety of houseplants, pots, accessories and gifts” and a “Plant Design Service” where they consult, design and maintain indoor plants in your house and a “Private Event Space” for gatherings. It is best to visit their website or their shop for their products and services.
They are open 11:00 – 6:00 on weekdays, 10:00 – 5:00 on Saturday & Sunday and closed on Tuesday.
If you live in Sacramento and you are a gardening enthusiast, there are two other places you might want to visit. One is a virtual community on Facebook called Sacramento Gardening Group.
With over 10,000 members, you can get a lot of help from local plant enthusiasts. Everybody is respectful and professional. Give it a try.
